I was struggling with my weight and my overall health. I set myself a goal to learn to run for 10km and put an exercise and eating plan together. I tried to ‘eat and live the life of an athlete’! Twelve weeks later I was amazingly strong and fit and ran every step of that 10km. That was in 2013 and I simply never went back to what I was.

How does Be Strong work?
We encourage you to think about how you eat, move and live. You are provided with a fully personalised welcome pack, which provides you with all the information you need to begin your Be Strong lifestyle.

Where are your groups?

Monday – Darwen

Is it all about weight loss?
Not at all, although the vast majority of our members initially joined to lose weight. We encourage our members to be more confident, to make better choices in all areas of their lives.

Do I need to register or can I just turn up?
Be Strong is a membership based community. At £12 per month it’s the equivalent of £2.83 per week – a similar price to a Starbucks coffee! You can become a member instantly by choosing the Sign Up option from the navigation menu. It shows commitment and also provides you with your unique daily nutritional needs (calories), access to our fantastic weight tracker tools, recipes, advice and meal ideas. You can also attend as many classes as you like! There is no tie in and you can cancel it at any time you wish. Otherwise it’s £5 per visit whilst you make your mind up whether to join or not – sign up here before you attend.

If I turn up do I need to bring any money with me?
Only if you haven’t signed up to a membership before you arrive. Then you can forget about bringing cash to the sessions and attend as many of our groups as you like. Otherwise it’s £5 per visit whilst you make your mind up whether to join or not.

I've heard that you have to calorie count - I don't want to have to count calories for the rest of my life?
We become ‘calorie aware’, it’s different …and in Rachel’s own words it allowed her to “have a second chance at living!” Be Strong encourages you to eat the food you love eating, within boundaries and in moderation. Don’t let anybody convince you that calories aren’t the new cool!

Will I not just put the weight back on like I've always done in the past?
We hope not. Be Strong gives you all the information you need to adjust your lifestyle and break the cycle of any bad eating habits you may have. Its a learning experience, best of all we keep it really simple all of the time.

How long will it take to lose weight?
We recommend a safe and healthy weight loss of 1 to 2lbs per week which is between 3.2 stones and 7.4 stones in 12 months. If you have a lot to lose and need to lose the weight faster, and safely, we can advise on that too.

How is Be Strong different?
We’re not in this for commercial reasons, we genuinely want to help people. We’re very honest, empathetic, supportive and totally dedicated to helping you. Rachel and Rick have both walked in your shoes and, in Rick’s case, at the very top end of the scale – no pun intended! They both know how difficult this is, but they also both have the key to your success – you just need to work with them to unlock it.

Do I have to exercise when I'm there?
No – but we would love you to try! Come along to the session early and have a chat with Rick, he will explain how it all works and without any pressure or obligation. If our exercises are not for you then the weighing, discussion, online and personal support, group activities and events are more than enough to help you achieve success. Our exercise sessions are all completed on the spot and each exercise is suitable for people who have been totally INACTIVE. Be Strong has adapted these exercises to be completed by a large group. There is usually some apprehension, followed by lots of fun, smiles, laughter …and sweat! Bring a towel and a drink to each session.

So, you're not just an exercise group then?
Not at all, although we do exercise. We’ve simply put something together that works, is endorsed by the NHS and provides everything you need to be successful under one roof.

Membership works out at £2.83 per week and you can attend up to 5 classes - why is it so cheap?
Rick works tirelessly to help people become active. He delivers completely free Couch to 5k running sessions 3 times per week, all year round, to help inactive people to learn to run for 5km. Over 6,000 people have benefited and its the largest in the world. There is no subsidy – its sustained by a unique model that Rick developed. Be Strong is different, it cannot be delivered for free, but it can be delivered to an extremely high standard at a very low price. Be Strong is about people, not money.

What do I need to wear?
Comfortable clothing, trainers, bring a drink and a towel too!

What if I can't keep up with the exercises?
You will. We have designed our exercises to be totally all inclusive and everybody can do them. If you have a physical reason why you cannot do a particular exercise, we’ll give you one that you can do instead.

Will you read my weight out to everybody and start clapping?
No. Our discussions are just that, discussions. We try and make them interesting and relevant each week. We NEVER read out weight losses, or gains, but we do discuss lots of interesting things. We believe that access to good quality information and a strong and positive mind is the key to success – we can help you with that! We also look to undertake some challenges as a group and the level of participation is entirely up to you. Its rare for somebody to leave before the discussion starts although its cool to do so if you choose.
